About PYSL -- Our Commitment:
The Poway Youth Soccer League is committed to providing the best soccer experience possible for those players who have demonstrated that they have a high level of talent for and dedication to the sport. We believe that the goal should be the development of mental and physical talent and skill of our players to the highest level possible, both as an individual and as a team player. We also believe that winning is not as important as the player's development and successful player development will result in winning. This organization's success is measured by its excellence both on and off the field.

Statement of Purpose:

To provide a safe, fun, and progressive learning environment to develop recreational and competitive youth soccer players to the best of their ability.

The Poway Youth Soccer League exists to educate, coach and teach players the game of soccer. The primary goal of our League is to give our kids the opportunity to develop the skills needed to play, compete and achieve now and in the future. The principal philosophy of the League is that playing soccer should be a positive and supportive learning experience for children. To achieve this result our Recreation Program emphasizes playing time and soccer skill development and de-emphasizes competition and winning. The League strives to develop skilled soccer players who love to play the game. While most of the kids come from Poway, we welcome all players who either love the game or just want somewhere to play. Our kids expect to have fun, learn soccer, compete with other kids, and develop individual and team skills. Our League has a young, growing talent pool of players, experienced coaches, good fields, supportive Board of Directors, healthy environment, and great parental support. We are fortunate to have a vibrant, innovative organization, which offers a complete year-round program for the casual and committed soccer player.

PYSL offers a complete recreational and competitive program for boys and girls in the fall, including licensed professional coaches and trainers for our competitive players and free skill, shooting and goalie clinics for all players. Licensing clinics and training for recreational and competitive coaches and referees are offered yearly, and a micro-soccer program held in the spring. We're into the 9th year of the Thanksgiving weekend Poway Country Shootout Soccer Tournament for recreational and competitive teams. And we offer spring and Summer Soccer Camps directed by our professional coaching staff.

Our success can be measured by retention of players, increasing numbers of teams and levels of play, team success in competition at the local and state level, number of players in Olympic Development Program, and the visible support of our community.

Organization:

Tax Status
PYSL operates as a tax-exempt, non-profit 503(c) public benefit corporation and must adhere to all of the appropriate tax regulations. One of the benefits of this status is the ability to solicit and receive donations, which donors can treat as deductions for income tax purposes. In order for donors to utilize the tax-exempt status, donations or sponsorships must be made to PYSL and not to individual teams. Based on PYSL policies regarding sponsorship monies or donations, a large portion of the funds received on behalf of a particular team will be remitted to the team for them to use as they desire.

Operations:

The Poway Youth Soccer League is made up of players, parents, coaches, team managers, and Board of Directors. Board positions are both appointed and elected, and all serve as volunteers. An elected Board of Directors (the Executive Board) administers the business of the League and is assisted in decision-making by appointed volunteers that have accepted leadership positions within the League. Each competitive team's Team Manager represents that team on the Board. Currently, the Board positions include the following:

Executive Board Positions:
  • President
  • Vice-President Competitive
  • Vice President Recreational
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer

    Appointed Board Positions:
  • Registrar
  • Volunteer Coordinator
  • Uniform Coordinator
  • Sponsorships Coordinator
  • Presidio League Representative Coordinator
  • Tournament Director
  • Field and Equipment Coordinator
  • Picture Day Coordinator
  • Special Projects Coordinator
  • Publicity
  • PYSA Representative

Job descriptions for these board positions are available. Nominations for Executive Board positions are made in October of each year at the regularly scheduled general Board meeting, and elections are held in November-with voting usually occurring on the final day of fall soccer. All residents of Poway and the nearby areas are considered members of PYSL, and, in accordance with PYSL by-laws, are eligible to vote. Write-in candidates are accepted.

Board meetings are held on the second Monday of each month from 7:30pm to 10:00 at the Poway Community Center. All interested participants are encouraged to attend.
