New Blood Pumps Life int Titans Soccer Team

Anchoring the defense for the Poway High soccer team is senior goalkeeper Keith Cline, elevated from a reserve role on last year's championship squad.
Helping lead the attack is junior midfielder Alex Henry, building on his starting experience from the title season.
From one end of the field to the other, with largely a new lineup that has some ties to last year, the Titans are showing they can survive and thrive despite losing 15 seniors to graduation.
Poway, which began the week 16-2-3 overall and 4-2 in the Palomar League, is ranked No. 2 in the San Diego Section behind La Costa Canyon. The Titans, unbeaten in their first 15 games, are bidding for a fourth straight league crown before participating in the San Diego Section Division I playoffs that start Feb. 24.
Cline waited his turn last year behind incumbent goalkeeper Ian Weinberg as Poway followed its section title by reaching the final of the Southern California Regionals.
“It was good for me to observe the way things ran, to watch and learn,” said Cline, who opened this season with four shutouts in five games. “I've always been playing with older guys. What I learned most from that was how to work with the younger players on the team. So now I talk to them and help, if I can.”
Although Cline had limited playing time last season, he had plenty of action against his talented teammates in practice.
“He had a great workout every practice,” Titans coach Gene Morris said. “Those guys were shooting on him left and right. Now he just comes up clutch for us.”
The 5-foot-11 Cline, known for his athletic skills, has been at home in goal since his start in competitive soccer six years ago.
“You can be either a scorer or a score blocker,” Cline said. “I like being a score blocker. When you have a 1-0 lead and you stop the shot on a breakaway, it feels the best.”
Henry has earned notice for his passing skills. Last season, he led the Titans with 13 assists.
“I guess it's because I used to be a lot smaller as a kid,” the 5-foot-9 Henry said. “I'd be playing the ball off (to others) more and not trying to go at people as much. The skill of putting the ball where I want it to be was my main focus.”
This year, Henry has been asked to increase his scoring. His 10 goals have surpassed his total of eight last season.
“I expected him to get some goals this year because he has a great shot,” Morris said. “He can put the ball on a dime. He just has great touches.”
Henry has benefited from participating in the Olympic Development Program. After attending a tryout camp for the first time last summer, he has played on regional and state teams.
“It's changed my whole outlook on the game,” Henry said. “There are a lot of good players out there. I have to work that much harder to catch the attention of college coaches or maybe professional coaches.”
“We keep a positive mind-set,” Henry said. “Work as a team. Grow as a team.”
From one end to the other.

Usual Suspects Put Poway in Finals
Spencer Skeen, E.J. Schneekluth and Collin Wooster each scored a goal to lead seventh-seeded Poway to a 3-1 victory over Fresno Roosevelt in the Division I CIF Southern California Championship semifinals at Fresno Pacific tonight. Poway (22-2-4) didn't need overtime this time around, easily knocking off third-seeded Roosevelt (20-5-5), by jumping out to a 2-0 halftime lead. Wooster had the assist on Skeen's score, the first goal of the game. Schneekluth gave the Titans the eventual game-winner off a penalty kick. Wooster's goal came off a corner kick assisted by Alex Henry. Poway will play top-seeded Santa Monica (28-0-1) for the regional title on Saturday at Warren HS in Downey at 1 p.m.-Julie Cudney

PHS Advanced to Semi's of CIF Regionals
Poway's Ian Weinberg blocked a penalty kick attempt from Erick Zuniga of Saddleback to set off a wild celebration as the seventh-seeded Titans bounced the second-seeded Roadrunners, 2-2, (2-1, in PKs) in the quarterfinals of the Division I CIF Southern California Regional Championship Tuesday at Segerstrom High School. The victory moves Poway (21-2-4) into the semifinals to play Roosevelt of Fresno, a 3-2 winner over Peninsula of Palos Verdes.
Weinberg, a senior, stopped four of five penalty kick attempts from Saddleback and attributed much of his success to Poway's hard fought win against San Diego HS in the San Diego Section Division I final Saturday. Weinberg felt going to PKs with the Cavers gave him confidence going to the penalty phase against Saddleback. Weinberg also notes that seeing so many PKs in the past few days gave him an edge in reading where he though the Saddleback players might go with their shots.
Weinberg stopped the first two shots by Jesus Salgado and Gerardo Guzman, before Edward Zepeda connected on what would be Saddleback's only successful PK. Poway had similar troubles with the Roadrunners' Gabriel Cueva, but shots from Alex Henry and the eventual game-winner by E.J. Scheekluth proved to be enough.
In regulation, Poway was the aggressor throughout much of the first half, but couldn't nudge across a goal until senior Peter Katakalidas scored with just less than 10 minutes left in the half. Perhaps the goal eased the Titans, who came out low in the second half and were in constant defense-mode against a skillful, tactically efficient Saddleback team. Saddleback (23-4-1) threaded the Poway defense with precise passing and long balls that kept defenders Zach Olow, Brian Romag, Gunnar Emery and Bryce Biolawa on their toes.
Saddleback tied the game at 1-1 with 29 minutes remaining when sophomore Kishein Lopez scored on a rebounded save by Weinberg. Poway retook the lead 2-1, eight minutes later, when senior Collin Wooster headed in a corner kick from Bilowa. After another eight minutes elapsed, it was Saddleback's turn again when Guzman controlled a shot from Omar Laris and barely got it past Weinberg.
Each team failed on excellent opportunities to take the lead late. Poway's Wooster just missed putting in another header with three minutes left and Zepeda hit the crossbar a minute later.
In the 15-minute sudden death overtime frame, Trent Skomra almost ended it about 3:30 in when he skidded a free kick toward the lower right of the goal entrance. Cueva, however, made a dazzling save. Poway coach Eugene Morris felt his team took being seeded seventh as a slight to them and the San Diego Section, but instead of being bitter it motivated his team. Weinberg expressed some disappointment at the lower than desired seed, but figured it was tough to seed a tournament when so many teams from so different areas hadn't played each other.

PREP BOYS SOCCER: Titans grab title in penalty kicks
By SCOTT BAIR - Staff Writer | Saturday, March 1, 2008 10:55 PM PST
EL CAJON ---- Gene Morris simply couldn't watch. Poway High's boys soccer coach found solace in an empty stretch of turf far away from the drama building at the other end.
A San Diego Section Division I championship was to be decided on penalty kicks between the Titans and San Diego, an anxiety-inducing endeavor involving equal parts luck and skill. Back and forth Morris paced, unable to help his players any further.
A goal was the only missing component to 95 minutes of expertly played soccer from both sides. There was high drama, scoring chances aplenty and excellent goalkeeper play throughout a match that had to be resolved in a way disdained by soccer purists.
The teams exchanged penalty kicks for four rounds, but Titans keeper Ian Weinberg broke that trend in the fifth. He blocked San Diego's attempt, the deciding play in a match Poway won 5-4 on penalty kicks on Saturday evening at Valhalla High.
"It's a shame that it had to end this way, but it doesn't make winning any less enjoyable," said Morris, drenched from a celebratory watercooler shower. "I'm won so much at the club level, but nothing compares to this. I couldn't be more proud of these kids and all they've accomplished."
Morris brought the team together after the awards ceremony for a quick talk.
"I've got some great news," Morris said. "We have practice on Monday."
The Titans (20-2-4) will carry on after earning an automatic bid into the CIF Southern California Regional Tournament, which begins on Tuesday. The Titans' opponent and seed will be decided this afternoon.
They're in the regional championship thanks to a defense that once again proved impenetrable. The San Diego Section's finest back line stood tall under pressure, shutting down a Cavers offense predicated on speed and counter attacks. San Diego (17-3-1) only took three shots in the second half and Weinberg only had to make two saves in the entire match.
Weinberg wasn't called upon often, but he came through when it mattered most.
The senior made a big-time stop in the shootout, an effort validated by a clutch penalty kick, ironically enough, by a player with the initials "P.K." Peter Katakalidis was the fifth and final shooter, with a section title weighing on his performance.
"I really tried to block everything out," he said. "I didn't want to think about the situation or what was at stake. I tried to keep it simple and focus on the kick itself."
Katakalidis did just that, confidently driving it into the lower left corner.
That sent Poway's side into hysterics as Poway's first title since 1994 truly sunk in.
"This is just incredible," Poway stopper Gunnar Emery said. "This was the biggest game of our lives and we won it. This is unlike anything I've ever experienced. It's a moment I'll never forget."

SPECIAL TO THE UNION-TRIBUNE
As they approach the playoffs with the Poway High soccer team, seniors Trent Skomra and Collin Wooster already know what it's like to win a section title.
The two decided to get some kicks in football in the fall and ended up being part of the school's first championship team in that sport.
“It was awesome,” Skomra said. “I didn't understand it all going into football. So we just kind of hung back – in contrast to soccer, where we're used to getting the team together. All the guys in the football program had just been dreaming of this since they were so young.”
The dream season had a perfect ending as the Titans finished 12-0 with a 21-7 victory over Rancho Buena Vista in the Division I final.
“It was exciting, and we still haven't lost a football game,” Wooster said. “We don't know what it's like to lose. It's just good to be part of school history.”
Still involved in the football playoffs, Skomra and Wooster watched the Poway soccer team go 5-0-1 to the start the season, capped by the Coronado Invitational championship. After returning, they helped the Titans remain unbeaten over their first 13 games (11-0-2).
Poway, which began this week 16-2-3 overall and 5-2-1 in the Palomar League, is scheduled to conclude the regular season tonight at Rancho Bernardo.
In the playoffs, the Titans will seek to go beyond their quarterfinal showing of last year.
Leading the way will be Skomra and Wooster, third-year varsity members.
“They wer
e my captains, Day One,” Poway coach Gene Morris said. “They've been with me three years. All of the kids on the team like them. They love playing the game. When we've had little issues, I've asked them to work it out, and they've done a good job.”
The two are among seven returning starters for the Titans, including senior goalkeeper Ian Weinberg and junior defender Zach Olow, who anchor a stingy defense.
“Last season was supposed to be a growing year (for the team), and we performed awesome,” Skomra said. “From there, our senior year is supposed to be our solid year. I figured coming into this there's no reason we can't be phenomenal.”
From his usual position at center midfield, Skomra opted to play back on defense this season as a way to strengthen the overall lineup. He has remained the Titans' free-kick specialist with two goals and four assists.
Wooster, who has eight goals and four assists, helps spearhead a balanced attack that was also fueled by Matt Brooks, Alex Henry and E.J. Schneekluth.
Over the years, the soccer squad has provided the football team with kickers. Skomra had anticipated doing so this school year and then talked Wooster into joining him on the eve of opening drills.
Having two kickers proved beneficial. When Skomra was sidelined by a torn quad muscle early in the season, Wooster handled the job the rest of the year.
Among Wooster's highlights were a 38-yard field goal and two tackles.
“It was a lot different than soccer,” Wooster said. “Everything's on you. Soccer is more of a team sport. In football, everyone is looking to do it by yourself. It's more nerve-wracking, but it's fun.”
Especially when that championship feeling kicks in.

Wooster Gives Poway Reason to Crow
Senior Collin Wooster cashed in the game-winning goal with 30 seconds remaining to give Poway a 2-1 victory over Westview in a Palomar League matchup on Tuesday at Westview. The Wolverines (9-6-7, 2-5-2) scored first, but senior Brian Romag tied the score for Poway (17-2-3, 6-2-1) with a header off an assist by Wooster. Sophomore Alex Henry dished out the assist on Wooster's score. Poway senior Gunner Emery led the backfield and kept the Westview offense at bay.-Julie Cudney/http://soccer.xksandiego.com/
